Patrick Cote is a tough Canadian fighter whose on a tear as of late, winning his last 3 bouts against Jason Day, Kendall Grove, and Drew McFedries via complete anniliation (TKO). Cote also trains at Brazilian Top Team in Canada alongside welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre.
Almeida is a 3rd degree black belt in JUjitsu under Renzo Gracie, a dangerous fighter with a win over top contender Nate Marquardt at Pancrase - Hybrid 10, albeit way back in 2003.
In my view he is certainly near the top of the contender list alongside Kenny Florian, and probably should be ahead of Roger Heurta. He has a great game and it showed against his epic battle against fellow contender Frankie “The Answer” Edger last year.
Word on the street is that current welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre just recruited new blood to his team of trainers - Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Thompson holds an amateur record of 33-0 resulting in 16 titles, 6 of which are from International Kickboxing Federation (IKF).
After being knocked down from title contention yet again, it looks like Karo “The Heat” Pariysan is making some changes and is now training with current welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre at Team Jackson in New Mexico. Since he wont be facing GSP in the near future - might as well join and learn from the best.
C.B. Dollaway looked very upset at the stoppage last Saturday night when Herb Dean called the fight when eventual winner Amir Sadollah locked in an armbar in the first round. During the subsequent replay it was clear that C.B. did in fact tap, albeit once - and the call was the right one.
As mentioned earlier, Dustin “McLovin” Hazellet and Josh “The People’s Warrior” bout last night ended up earning “Fight of the Night” recognition. Unfortunately they were on the preliminary card so it was not televised, but thanks to Harley Davidson - it’s free on UFC.com! So check out all the JUjitsu craziness that Mclovin throws down that earned him $40,000 in bonus money.
Firing off submission attempts like a friggin machine gun, from the always fun to say ‘omaplata’ to arm triangle to anaconda choke to guillotine, Hazellet kept “The People’s Warrior” Josh Burkman in trouble all night long. After Dustin connected with a front kick followed by a head kick to poor Burkman, he jumped all over him securing an armbar in one of the most sickest ways I’ve ever seen - nice JUjistu indeed.
