TUF7: Amir Sadollah vs C.B. Dollaway

Amir Sadollah vs CB Dalloway

Update: Check out the The Ultimate Fighter Finale reivew of C.B Dollaway vs Amir Sadollah right here!

The last episode of The Ultimate Fighter we jump right into into the thick of things: CB Dollaway vs Amir Sadollah. With the mystery of The Ultimate Fighter’s “most shocking twist in history” - this quick start to the action foreshadows the upcoming bombshell that is sure to be revealed later on in the episode.

CB Dollaway lets us know in the prior episode that Amir is his biggest threat, and rightly so.  Amir possesses a level of striking that is a least a notch above everyone else’s in the house, and since being tested against the power of Gerald Harris and the formidable standup game of Matt Brown - Amir’s true strength comes from his never say die attitude. Is Amir’s superior striking and fighting spirit enough to defeat the number 1 pick or will CB Dollaway ’s explosiveness and wrestling prove too much?

Striking: 7.5 out of 10

Surprisingly CB is slightly the more aggressive fighter when it comes to standup. Initiating exchanges with leg kicks, unfortunately for him Amir is the more accurate of the two.  While CB charges in with fists flailing Amir excellently times his kicks, one of which connects flush with CB’s stomach sending him reeling onto the canvas. CB tries valiantly to stand up but loses every exchange - usually with Amir landing some sort of front kick that forces CB to rely on his wrestling.

In an impressive display Amir lands a front kick and immediately combos it up with a Superman punch to again floor CB, very technical Amir has a great sense of the standup game.  Unfortunately he sometimes gets over anxious as he is lulled into throwing straight left-right punch combinations while walking in, giving CB the perfect opportunity to shoot in and get Amir in a double leg for the takedown.

Ground Game: 7 out of 10

With his domination over Cale Yareborough and Nick Klein, on paper CB Dollaway’s polished wresting should make prove too much for Amir. Unlike Jesse Taylor’s win over Tim Credeur, CB is not content with simply laying on top of Amir, sneaking in limp punches while avoiding submission attempts. Dollaway is relentless with his positioning, constantly moving, attemping to get past Amir’s guard for side control or full mount.

Thanks to Amir’s JUjitsu ability, CB’s ground and pound was largely ineffective. Although later on in the fight he seemed to get a hang of Amir’s defense and would start timing his attacks - one particular moment was using his explosiveness to posture up and deliver an elbow right through Amir’s guard.  One noticeable flaw in his ground game was despite Rampages instruction, CB failed to throw elbows to Amir’s body while he had side control.

CB’s relentlessness finally paid off in the 2nd round and eventually worked himiself into Amir’s half-guard, even briefly securing his arm underneath his leg for a sort of half cruxifix.  While in this position both scrambled and CB managed to go between back control, where he would try and slip in the hooks and work the rear naked choke, and the full mount position.

JUjitsu: 8 out of 10

Yet again we see Amir’s fighting spirit come shining through. Where Cale and Nick failed to handle CB’s ground and pound Amir did a great job of avoiding any side control or mount attempts.  With a steady flow of submission attempts including armbars to keep CB off balance and guessing.

Amir also controlled CB to a point where he almost completely neutralized all of his attacks, holding his wrists, implementing an overhook to control his posture and to help telegraph any of CB’s bombing runs.  Dalloway looked almost frustrated as he would waste energy trying to get into half guard Amir would quickly used hip escapes to deny him. Amir definately did a better job than Tim Credeur of using his JUjitsu - for both defense and offense. Using a couple scrambles to get CB off him by using toe hooks and triangles.

Looking like a true veteran Amir took advantage while CB tried to posture up to catch him in a lightning fast armbar to end the fight - from the bottom position no less.  Very nice.

Overall: 8.2 out of 10

Amir proves to be the more well rounded fighter, able to win standing up, completely blunt CB Dollaway’s  ground game with some technical jujitsu, kept him off balance and finally catch CB with an armbar - great display all around.

  1. WOW! I’m shocked that Amir made it this far. I knew he was a tough striker, I just never would have thought he’d make it this far with his standup. I know there are so many others who have a strong ground game, I’m surprised that no one was able to take advantage of it.
