Gina Carano vs Kaitlin Young

Posing in Maxim magazine photoshoots, appearing in the upcoming Red Alert 3 video game, and spewing really bad one liner’s as an [tag]American Gladiator[/tag] personality - she also happens to beat other chicks faces in.  She is Gina “Conviction” Carano and she is doing it all in style…

As one of [tag]EliteXC[/tag]’s top draws along side internet sensation [tag]Kimbo Slice[/tag], [tag]Gina Carano[/tag] helped headline arguably one of mixed martial arts most important night - appearing on broadcast network television during primetime (last Saturday May 31st at 7pm EST on CBS).

Gina’s opponent was considered to be a decent test in [tag]Kaitlin Young[/tag], featuring a 4-1 record where 3 of those wins came from just 1 grueling night in a tournament held by Bodog Fight called HOOKnSHOOT.  All of them ended in the first round - so Kaitlin has to be one tough girl.  Unfortunately for her, Gina had other things in mind.

The Good

Their fight literally kicked off on a high note - Gina immediately used her significant weight advantage by throwing very heavy straight front kicks that got Kaitlin’s attention.  Carano displayed a nice variety of strikes, often beating Muay Thai expert Young to the punch.

Repeatedly peppering Young with heavy right hands and jabs that stopped her in her tracks, Carano was even able to catch one of Kaitlin’s kicks to immediately sweep and obtain top control.  Even with her good looks Gina was not afraid to get in there and mix it up,  she always got the better of the exchanges.

Often considered one of her weakest points is her ground game - Carano was actually able to neutralize Young from the bottom by using a high (or rubber) guard and implement a freaking gogoplata. This was particularly awesome as it requires some degree of dexterity as Gina had to slip her foot under Young’s chin and pull down on her head causing her to choke.  It wasn’t a textbook gogoplata as it would’ve game over for Kaitlin if performed 100% correctly, but it was still a good strategy as it let Gina regain her own breath while grinding down her opponent.

With the 2nd round winding down Carano began to tee off on Young’s face, landing everything including the kitchen sink.  Eventually pushing Young down to the canvas with yet another front kick, Gina had the presence of mind to pounce, attain back control and work the rear naked choke on a weakened & stunned Young before being saved by the bell.

Badly battered and bruised the official’s decided enough was enough and stopped the fight before the 3rd round.  In a very endearing gesture Gina kissed her fallen opponent on the top of her head as a sign of respect. Very genuine and it added a feminine touch to mma, Carano gains another memorial victory to her resume.

Next, we look at what Gina did wrong, horribly horribly wrong…

  1. They should just let the blood-letting of women go. What did CBS think this was? A slap fight?? It’s MMA, biatches!!

  2. Gina is a bitch. Seriously, why wouldn’t she make weight for the fight? I blame it on bloating and cramps :)

  3. I think it’s going to be tough to mainstream women competing in MMA. Especially when it comes to finishing eachother off. The blood, the heads bouncing off the mats….hmmm, I don’t think many people will find that very appealing.

Personally I have a difficult time sitting through a match like this…I don’t know what it is. It’s the culture I guess.

  4. I thought it was a good fight - I personally dont even see the difference, if i see some actual skill being displayed then im good to go :)

I’ll have a write up on Faber vs Pulver later on tonight guys so keep checking in!
